MY STORY

Currently based in Los Angeles, originally from San Diego, I, Charna Flam, am an entertainment writer. Over the years, I have always had an affinity for pop-culture, studying film during both my undergraduate and graduate careers at University of Delaware and Chapman University, respectively.

Fresh out of college in 2018 I moved to New York City and advertising/media planning as a Media Planner at IPG Mediabrands'  Universal McCann, under the Johnson and Johnson account.  During my two years at UM, I was an Associate Media Planner, and worked on several brands including Johnson’s Baby, Band-Aid, Listerine, and J&J Corporate.

My agency career was a great experience and I learned a lot, but as those two years progressed I created an entertainment newsletter, covering top stories each week, monthly recaps, and yearly top 10 lists. After those two years I decided to pivot and transition to an entirely new career path, and pursue entertainment reporting.

I then applied for a Master’s Program at Chapman University within Dodge College of Film and Media Studies. Throughout my graduate program, I wrote several academic papers discussing the contemporary film and television industry, covering streaming services and focusing the relationship between Netflix and politics.

Ahead of enrolling in graduate school in the fall of 2021, I interned for the New York Post in the Digital Features department in the summer of 2021. My time at the New York Post, ultimately led me to my internship at TheWrap where I continued to write exclusively about entertainment, covering film, television, music, and internet trends.

I wrote for TheWrap from May to August 2022, which then led me to my current position, as an editorial intern for Variety. Since beginning in January 2023, my time at Variety has included over 300 articles, the opportunity to interview actors, directors, writers, producers, costume designers, composers, production designers, comedians, music supervisors and many more at red carpet premieres, live Q&As, press junkets, one-on-one zoom calls and the 2023 writers' strike. In addition to writing features and interviews, I reported on the daily film and television news, in addition to assisting with breaking news.
